The Recognition
From a pool of applicants nationwide, the Growing Hope Project (Phases I and II) of San Andreas High School received an Outstanding Design Award in the 2019 Architectural Portfolio ofAmerican School & University Magazine, the premier showcase celebrating the best in education design.

The Growing Hope Project is an Advanced Technology Farming Pathway that inspires and energizes communities by connecting science and technology with vibrant living. It provides a sustainable, hands-on learning environment that allows students to grow plants without soil and under artificial or filtered natural light. The Growing Hope Project gives students entrepreneurial skills, vocational skills for agricultural careers and education about healthy food.

From a forgotten locker room to a living classroom, the Growing Hope Project proves that when we nurture innovation, we cultivate both plants and possibilities.

Behind the Project

  • Transformation of a former locker room into a modern, interactive classroom
  • Integration of hydroponic growing systems to support hands-on learning
  • Integration of artificial and filtered natural light to support plant growth
  • Installation of efficient HVAC units linked to an energy management system for precise control
  • Washable architectural finishes designed for easy cleaning
  • Materials selected to withstand high humidity levels associated with hydroponic systems
  • Addition of an outdoor multipurpose garden and greenhouse
